Leveraging Health Policy Solutions to Address Obesity in Rural America (Journal of General Internal Medicine 2024)
In collaboration with research fellows from Harvard Medical School and Duke University, GHSEN addresses the disproportionate rates of obesity in rural America. Our discussions focus on evidence-based strategies such as increasing healthcare professionals in rural regions, expanding coverage for obesity-related services through H.R. 1577, and utilizing community-based initiatives like the CDC’s High Obesity Program.
Direct Primary Care: Financial Analysis and Potential to Reshape the U.S. Healthcare Landscape (Journal of General Internal Medicine 2024)
In collaboration with healthcare investors, GHSEN explores direct primary care (DPC) as a new primary care financing model, transitioning away from fee-for-service (FFS). We conduct an evidence-based financial analysis of DPC and FFS practices, finding that DPC can yield a higher net income of $175,000 compared to $150,607 for FFS, while delivering superior care services.
Public Health Responsibilities in the Era of GLP-1 Receptor Agonists (Journal of Public Health Management & Practice 2024)
In collaboration with healthcare researchers across Harvard Medical School, Duke University, and Carnegie Mellon University, the GHSEN team argues that the rise in popularity of GLP-1 receptor agonists necessitates public health responsibilities such as addressing off-label usage, pioneering independent research, and monitoring social media advertisements and misinformation.
Culturally Tailored Strategies to Enhance Type 2 Diabetes Care for South Asians in the United States (Journal of General Internal Medicine 2024)
In collaboration with researchers across Stanford University and Duke University, our team sheds light on factors driving the increased risk of South Asian populations to Type 2 Diabetes. We also disseminate evidence-based recommendations to bolster culturally tailored diabetes care for South Asians groups such as Indian Americans, Pakistani Americans, and Bangladeshi Americans.
Community Paramedicine: An Innovative Model for Value-Based Care Delivery (Journal of Public Health Management & Practice 2023)
In collaboration with researchers at MIT and Duke University, our team article focuses on community paramedicine, a primary care model in which EMTs and paramedics extend their roles beyond traditional 911 services to provide public health, digital health, and preventative care services. We argue that community paramedicine models can support value-based primary care delivery, increase access, and reduce the strain on emergency departments
Decentralized investing: A social innovation for broader patient engagement (Health Policy and Technology 2022)
GHSEN responds to the increase in private equity ownership and conversion to for-profit business models across healthcare organizations by proposing decentralized investing. We contend that patient-led ownership of healthcare can outcompete for-profit private equity-owned systems, offering lower costs, better outcomes, and increased attention to patient experiences.
The Novel Adenovirus: A Call for Advances in Health Infrastructure and Pandemic Preparedness (Journal of Public Health Management & Practice 2022)
In response to the rapid rise in novel adenovirus cases in the United States, GHSEN outlines strategies to bolster health systems and enhance pandemic preparedness. These strategies include advancing diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccines; improving data infrastructure for public health; establishing dedicated pandemic response workforces; and combating public health misinformation.
